Stephen Fox was born in Oxford in 1954.
Early Life
He showed early creative promise at school, where he won a prize in his fourth year of education. He later developed practical skills through work as a carpenter and builder.
Education
He received no formal art training beyond school and is a self-taught sculptor.
Career
By 1981, Fox was working as a self-employed carpenter and builder. He began carving in wood in 1985 before moving to France in 1990, where his sculptural practice developed further. He has since worked between Oxford, Normandy, and Westbury Farm Studios, establishing a career as a professional sculptor.

Style & Subject
His work combines abstract and figurative approaches, which he aims to have exist in dialogue with one another. He draws influence from sculptors such as Barbara Hepworth, Alberto Giacometti, and Constantin Brâncuși, and explores the relationship between contrasting ideas such as abstraction and representation, or science and spirituality.
