Simon Groves
Early Life
Simon started out working as a landscape gardener, where his use of chainsaws later influenced his transition into wood carving.
Career
He began carving in 2011 after creating his first carving for his sister’s wedding, which led him to explore further work such as mushrooms, benches, chairs, and later more complex sculptures including bears and small animals. He has since held solo exhibitions in a variety of settings and participated in numerous art fairs. In 2014, he was commissioned to create a life-sized World War One soldier for Rustington town centre, later expanding the work with a life-sized horse’s head as a companion piece. He continues to develop his practice through both traditional carving and modern woodworking techniques.
Materials
He works primarily in wood, using chainsaw carving alongside other traditional and modern woodworking tools.
Style & Subject
His work often depicts wildlife and natural forms, combining functional and sculptural pieces with expressive storytelling. His practice is strongly influenced by nature and conservation themes, aiming to highlight the beauty and fragility of the natural world through detailed and expressive wooden sculptures.
Exhibitions
He has held solo exhibitions and regularly shows his work at a variety of art fairs and exhibition settings.
