Born
Selma Calheira is a Brazilian ceramist from Ibirataia, Bahia.
Career
In the 1950s, at the age of 38, Calheira established her own ceramics studio, which she named Cores da Terra (Colours of the Earth). The name embodies her commitment to creating sustainable art. Beyond her personal practice, she is deeply invested in social responsibility, training local residents of Bahia to become professional ceramists. Through this initiative, she supports the community by providing meaningful employment that allows families to remain and work in their hometowns. In recognition of her contributions to economically disadvantaged communities in one of Brazil’s poorest regions, she received the Gente que Faz award in 1996.
