Early Life
Ruth moved to Cornwall after a period of study interruption during lockdown and later chose to step away from formal academic progression in favour of independent artistic practice.
Education
She completed two years of a BA (Hons) Fine Art at Brighton Metropolitan and later undertook a further year of a part-time art and design degree (2022), which she did not complete due to health considerations.
Career
Ruth Hawe is a sculptor and multidisciplinary creative who also works as a yoga teacher, as well as enjoying singing and writing. Her practice centres on sculpture and the upcycling of found materials, which she incorporates into her artistic work. She describes her creative process as intuitive and belief-driven, with a strong emphasis on environmental and ethical themes.
Materials
She works with upcycled found materials including wood, metal, stone, ceramics, crystals, and acrylic.
Style & Subject
Her sculptures are concept-driven and often incorporate crystals as symbolic references to spirituality. Recurring themes in her work include peace, liberation, emotional repression, and the interconnectedness of humans, animals, and the Earth. She has been a vegan since 1969, and her activism plays a big role in her artistic direction.
