Rupert Merton

Born
Rupert Merton is a UK-born sculptor.

Education
He studied pottery at school, completed an apprenticeship at Tingewick Pottery in Buckinghamshire (where he made slip-cast lamps for interior decorators), and later read History of Art at the University of Cambridge.

Career
Rupert Merton is a full-time potter working from studios in South West London and Catalonia, Spain. After completing his apprenticeship, he spent 12 years working in the music industry as an independent music publisher and manager, collaborating with artists including The Thompson Twins and Underworld, before returning to ceramics and sculpture.

He now works professionally as a potter and sculptor, exhibiting regularly with GrandyArt since 2010 and showing internationally with Sladmore Contemporary at events including Masterpiece (London), Collect at the Saatchi Gallery, Art Miami, Knebworth, and Woburn Park.

Materials
He works primarily in stoneware and porcelain, fired in electric kilns and occasionally using the Raku firing process. He has also worked with bronze and bronze resin, although he primarily works with ceramics now.

Style & Subject
His work includes domestic ware, sculptural ceramics, and installation-based pieces. His recent installations explore ideas of repetition and harmony, often incorporating words or images with direct, accessible meaning. His practice is informed by a fascination with the longevity of ceramics and the idea that pottery may survive as a record of civilisation long after other art forms have disappeared.

Rupert Merton sculptures are available from the sculpture park.
