Royal Katiyo
Born
Royal Katiyo was born in 1972 in Murehwa, Zimbabwe.
Early Life
Royal began sculpting while he was still in school, his artistic potential was recognized by established artist Luke Mugavazi, who took him on as an apprentice.
Career
After several years working with Luke Mugavazi, Katiyo went on to collaborate with Anderson Mukomberanwa, further refining his skills and developing his artistic voice. In 1996, he was selected as a Resident Artist at Chapungu Sculpture Park, a significant milestone in his career. Through Chapungu, he has participated in numerous international exhibitions and workshops, representing Zimbabwean sculpture on a global stage.
Style & Subject
Royal is particularly known for his distinctive sculptures of quails, characterized by their rounded, “chubby” forms. His finishing technique resembles pointillism, creating a textured surface that evokes the delicate patterning of bird feathers.
Awards & Exhibitions
Royal has taken part in several major international exhibitions and residencies, including shows at the Missouri Botanical Gardens and Denver Botanic Gardens in the United States, RHS Wisley in Surrey, and Kew Gardens in London. His work has also been featured in exhibitions at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe.
