Ronnie Dongo
Born
Ronnie Dongo was born in 1967 in Zimbabwe.
Early Life
Dongo grew up in a family of prominent sculptors; his mother, Locardia Ndandarika, and stepfather, Joseph Ndandarika, were both leading artists in Zimbabwe. Although he showed an early love for art during his school years, he initially chose a different professional path. Originally training as a teacher before fully committing to a career in sculpture.
Career
After working in education, Dongo returned to his artistic roots, influenced by his upbringing and family legacy. In 2000, he travelled to the United Kingdom as a guest of Groundwork West Cumbria, where he led workshops in schools. He returned in 2002 and settled in Hampshire, continuing his work as a sculptor. Despite relocating, he maintains a strong connection to Zimbabwe, regularly returning to source stone directly from the mines for his work.
Materials
Dongo works primarily in stone, carefully selecting his materials in Zimbabwe and shipping them to the UK to ensure quality and suitability for his sculptures.
Style & Subject
His work reflects both his heritage and personal journey, shaped by the discipline and encouragement of his mother. He places strong emphasis on craftsmanship and finishing, values instilled during his upbringing in a family of sculptors.
