Robert Clatworthy

Born
Robert Clatworthy was born in 1928 in England. He passed away in 2015.

Early Life
Clatworthy grew up in the West Country, where his early environment helped shape his artistic sensibilities.

Education
He studied at the West of England College of Art before completing national service. He later attended the Chelsea School of Art, where he was taught by Bernard Meadows. Following this, he joined the Slade School of Fine Art at the encouragement of Henry Moore.

Career
In the early 1950s, Clatworthy gained significant experience working as an assistant to Henry Moore, which proved to be an important breakthrough in his development.

He formed a lasting friendship with Elisabeth Frink, whose work he continued to admire throughout his life.

At the height of his career, despite commercial success, Clatworthy remained committed to working according to his own artistic pace and principles. This led to tensions with galleries and dealers, as he resisted pressure to produce work at a faster rate.

Materials
He frequently worked in bronze, often casting from rapidly worked plaster models, which contributed to the distinctive surface quality of his sculptures.

Style & Subject
Clatworthy is best known for his stylised and highly abstracted sculptures, particularly his powerful depictions of animals such as bulls and cats. His work is characterized by textured, energetic surfaces that reflect the immediacy of his process, giving his sculptures a dynamic and sometimes menacing presence.
