Philomena Davidson
Born
Philomena Davidson is a UK-based sculptor.
Early Life
She grew up in a family of musicians and dancers working in theatre and film, which exposed her early on to performance and visual storytelling.
Education
She studied at the City & Guilds of London Art School, followed by a travelling scholarship in Europe with a focus on Greek sculpture. She later undertook postgraduate study at the Royal Academy Schools, where she won both the Royal Academy Schools Gold Medal for Sculpture and the Bronze Medal for Figurative Work. She also spent three years in Japan studying Japanese arts and language.
Career
She established a studio in London and later opened a bronze foundry in Milton Keynes in 1982. In 1984, she became a member of the Royal Society of Sculptors and went on to serve as its first female president from 1990 to 1996. She has exhibited widely, completed numerous high-profile commissions, and her work is held in both private and public collections. She has also worked in animatronics and digital animation for film, including Little Shop of Horrors and Aliens.
Materials
She works across a range of materials, selected according to the conceptual needs of each piece, with a strong emphasis on bronze and constructed sculptural forms.
Style & Subject
Her work is primarily figurative but has become increasingly surreal over time. It explores themes of identity, transformation, and the “self,” often influenced by powerful natural forces such as earthquakes, volcanoes, floods, and storms. Her sculptures frequently combine abstract structure with figurative elements, using theatrical form, metaphor, and spatial manipulation to create expressive impact.
Philomena’s sculptures are available from the sculpture park.
