Nigel Williams

Born
Nigel Williams is a UK-born sculptor and photographer based in Berkshire. He has also spent time living and working near the Rocky Mountains in Western Canada.

Education
Williams holds a Master’s Degree in Computer Animation. Despite his formal background in digital media, he is largely self-taught in sculpture, metalworking, woodworking, photography, and image manipulation, having developed these skills independently over many years.

Career
Before dedicating himself fully to art, Williams worked professionally in computing, automotive design, animation, photography, and multimedia. He now focuses on sculpture and photographic practice from his workshop and studio in Berkshire.

His work has been exhibited throughout the United Kingdom and is held in private collections in Spain, the United States, Australia, and New Zealand.

Materials
Williams primarily works with sheet metals including copper, brass, steel, and aluminium, often incorporating recycled materials and found objects into his sculptures. Salvaged industrial and domestic artefacts frequently form the structural basis of his work.

His photographic practice focuses on texture, surface, detail, and patina, and he occasionally combines photography and sculpture to create hybrid 2D and 3D works.

Style & Subject
Williams’ sculpture draws influence from industrial archaeology, heritage transport, modern abstract sculpture, and ethnic mask-making. His practice combines technical precision with imaginative transformation, often balancing humour, nostalgia, and darker reflections on industrial decline and human conflict.

Two major themes recur throughout his work: the creation of botanical forms from spent armaments, and the “fantastic embellishment” of antique industrial and domestic artefacts. The former addresses the contradictions and violence of human conflict, while the latter celebrates craftsmanship, machinery, and historical design through playful reinvention.

Central to Williams’ practice is an exploration of lost manufacturing traditions and the erosion of practical skills in modern industrial society. Through reworking discarded materials and obsolete objects, he seeks to evoke fascination, curiosity, and renewed appreciation for craftsmanship and engineering heritage.
