Nicolas Moreton
Born
Nicolas Moreton is a British artist born in 1961 in Watford.
Early Life
From an early age, Moreton demonstrated a strong talent for drawing and painting. He began carving during the final year of his Fine Art degree in 1985, a turning point that established sculpture as the central focus of his artistic practice.
Education
Moreton trained at Nene College of Art and Design and later at Wolverhampton Polytechnic, graduating in 1985.
Career
Moreton has been working as a sculptor for nearly 35 years, he became an elected member of the Royal Society of Sculptors in 1995.
From the beginning of his career, Moreton committed himself almost exclusively to direct carving, choosing this path at a time when installation and assemblage dominated much of contemporary sculpture. His early solo exhibitions in the 1990s established him as a distinctive presence within British sculpture.
His work has been widely exhibited throughout the United Kingdom and is represented in numerous public and private collections internationally. Over the years, he has received multiple awards recognising his contribution to contemporary stone sculpture.
Materials
Moreton works primarily in stone, favouring the dark blue-grey Northampton limestone discovered on the farm where his studio is based. He also carves in Purbeck marble, Derbyshire Fossil stone, and Ancaster Weatherbed limestone.
Style & Subject
Moreton’s sculpture challenges traditional expectations of monumentality and heroic figuration, instead exploring organic, plant-like, and abstracted forms. His carving occupies a space between representation and abstraction, often evoking natural growth, movement, and transformation without settling into literal description.
Organic structures and botanical references recur throughout his sculpture, reflecting a deep engagement with the material qualities of stone and the possibilities of direct carving.
