Nicola Sebastio

Born
Nicola Sebastio was born on March 21, 1914, in Monghidoro, Italy, and died on September 5, 2005, in Busto Arsizio.

Education
Sebastio studied at the Liceo Artistico di Bologna under the guidance of Giorgio Morandi. He later continued his studies at the academies in Rome and Florence, graduating in 1936 with a thesis focused on Jacopo della Quercia and the portals of Basilica di San Petronio.

Career
Sebastio devoted much of his artistic life to sculpture centred on religious themes. During the World War II, he was drafted into the infantry and sent to Sicily. After being wounded, captured, and deported to Egypt as a prisoner of war, he continued to create sculpture under difficult conditions, producing small works from preserved food can lids. Despite the hardships, he later described this period as one of the most formative and meaningful of his life.

In 1941, Sebastio moved permanently to Milan after being invited to teach at the Scuola Beato Angelico. During this period, his association with Monsignor Giuseppe Polvara played an important role in shaping his religious and artistic outlook.

Throughout his career, Sebastio became known primarily as a sculptor and draftsman whose work explored sacred and devotional subjects.

Style & Subject
Sebastio’s sculpture focused predominantly on religious themes, combining traditional sacred subject matter with a strong sense of craftsmanship and spiritual reflection. His artistic formation was deeply influenced by Renaissance sculpture and ecclesiastical art, particularly the work of Jacopo della Quercia.
