Nick Moran
Born
Nick Moran is a British artist born in the United Kingdom in 1971.
Early Life
Moran’s interest in steel and metalworking developed while working at an industrial steelworks in Australia. This experience introduced him to the creative and sculptural possibilities of industrial materials and ultimately led him toward blacksmithing and sculpture.
Education
In 1996, Moran studied blacksmithing at Hereford College of Art.
Career
Following his studies, Moran established his own forge in London, where he developed his artistic practice alongside commissioned work for private and public clients.
His career has included several notable commissions. For the 2012 Summer Olympics, Moran created the sculpture Bryndis, and was later commissioned to create two sculptures for the Norwegian Bliss, an Arctic cruise ship.
Moran’s work is held in private collections internationally, reflecting the influence of his extensive travels and global outlook.
Materials
Moran works primarily with steel, drawing on both industrial fabrication techniques and traditional blacksmithing methods. His sculptures emphasise construction, engineering principles, and the expressive qualities of metal surfaces and structural forms.
Style & Subject
Moran’s artistic approach is strongly informed by the hard-edge painting movement of 1960s California and the industrial steel sculpture of David Smith. His work explores the visual language of engineering and construction, focusing on precision, structural integrity, and the history embedded within industrial processes.
Through abstract and architectonic forms, Moran investigates the relationship between material, geometry, and fabrication, creating sculptures that balance technical discipline with sculptural expression.
