Nicholas Uhlmann

Born
Nicholas Uhlmann was born in 1974 in Sydney.

Early Life
Following a period living in Papua New Guinea during early childhood, Uhlmann’s family relocated to the Adelaide Hills, where he spent most of his upbringing. After completing his secondary education in 1991, he travelled extensively around the world, experiences that culminated in a series of formative meditation retreats in Nepal.

Education
Uhlmann graduated with a BA in Visual Art in 2001.

Career
Since graduating, Uhlmann has focused on developing a sculptural practice that explores the relationship between humanity and the natural world. He lives and works in Aldgate within the Adelaide Hills, on the traditional lands of the Peramangk and Kaurna peoples.

His work has been exhibited throughout Australia and internationally. Over the course of his career, he has produced a substantial body of work ranging from miniature sculptures to large-scale outdoor public commissions.

Materials
While still a student, Uhlmann developed a distinctive sculptural method involving the wrapping of steel armatures with layers of thin metallic strips. This technique has since become the defining characteristic of his practice and has been continually refined throughout his career.

Style & Subject
Uhlmann’s sculpture combines organic form with constructivist structure, creating works that celebrate beauty, interconnectedness, and the relationship between people and nature. His sculptural language often suggests movement, growth, and transformation through intricate layered surfaces and flowing forms.

Influenced by meditation and philosophical ideas surrounding emptiness and interconnection, his work can be understood as a poetic exploration of shared human experience and the search for meaning throughout life.
