Moses Masaya
Born
Moses Masaya was born in 1947 in Nyanga, Zimbabwe. He passed away in 1996.
Early Life
He was first exposed to sculpture in 1966 by Frank Vanji. His early potential was later recognised by Joram Mariga in 1968.
Education
From 1968, Masaya underwent two years of mentorship under Joram Mariga, which played a key role in shaping his sculptural development.
Career
In 1970, Masaya joined Frank McEwen’s Vukutu Workshop, where his work gained international recognition, including an exhibition at the Musée Rodin in Paris. He also taught and mentored many artists, including his cousin Eddie, and influenced sculptor Lucky Office.
Materials
He primarily worked in green serpentine stone.
Style & Subject
Masaya’s work is characterised by dramatic carving of stone forms with sharp, clean lines, often significantly altering the natural shape of the material.
