Misheck Makaza

Born
Misheck Makaza was born in 1977 in Guruve, northern Zimbabwe.

Early Life
He is from the Shona tribe and was the sixth child in a family of seven. He completed his primary education in Guruve before beginning secondary education in Negomo in 1995, where he achieved five O Levels.

Career
After finishing school, he joined his brother Tinashe at Chapungu Sculpture Park, where Tinashe was undertaking a residency programme. Misheck initially worked as his assistant before beginning to create his own sculptures, which were soon purchased by visitors and collectors. Following his brother’s passing in July 2002, Misheck continued working full-time as a sculptor in his honour.

Materials
He works within the Zimbabwean Shona sculptural tradition, primarily carving stone.

Style & Subject
His work is inspired by the natural world, particularly mountains, clouds, and flowers. His sculptures often reflect flowing organic forms influenced by the landscape around him.
