Mihai Topescu
Born
Mihai Ţopescu was born in 1956 in Ţicleni, Romania.
Education
He studied at the Institutul de Arte Plastice “Ion Andreescu” in Cluj-Napoca, Romania.
Career
Over a career spanning more than 30 years, Ţopescu established himself as a notable glass artist, exhibiting his work throughout Europe. He developed a highly recognisable artistic language centred on sculptural glassmaking.
Materials
Glass is the primary material in his work, valued for its colour, transparency, and volume. He often combines glass with materials such as wood and metal to create more complex sculptural compositions.
Style & Subject
His work explores the visual and optical qualities of glass, emphasising light, mystery, and spatial interaction. Influenced by Romanian artistic traditions and the sculptural purity associated with Constantin Brâncuși, his sculptures balance abstraction with strong structural form. He also incorporates chromatic references inspired by traditional textile art from the Oltenia region of Romania.
