Michael Coombs

BORN:
1972

EDUCATION:
Michael Coombs studied at Epsom School of Art and Design, followed by a Fine Art Degree at Cardiff University, where he was awarded Student of the Year. He continued with postgraduate studies at the Slade School of Fine Art and completed a residency at the Rijks Academy in Amsterdam. He has also taught and lectured widely in the UK, India, Mexico, Peru, Argentina, and Guatemala.

CAREER:
Coombs’ work explores perception and challenges the viewer to look beyond first impressions. He creates casts of everyday objects that initially appear to be something else, introducing unexpected and sometimes unsettling twists. Upon closer inspection, the true nature of the objects is revealed, making the process of realisation central to his practice.
His work John’s Tractor exemplifies this approach. By directly casting a tractor in resin-soaked canvas, he creates a piece full of contradictions—seemingly soft yet actually hard, and apparently solid yet hollow.

MEDIUMS USED IN WORK:
Resin-soaked canvas, casting techniques, mixed materials.

SUBJECTS OF WORK:
Everyday objects, perception, illusion, and material transformation.
