Martin Matimura
EARLY LIFE:
Martin Matimura began sculpting in 2001. Before becoming an artist, he worked as a gardener for the well known sculptor Lameck Bonjisi. After attending a garden party hosted by Bonjisi, he was invited to learn sculpture the following day, marking the beginning of his artistic training.
LIVES:

CAREER:
Matimura learned sculpture under the mentorship of Lameck Bonjisi, to whom he credits much of his artistic knowledge. After Bonjisi’s passing, he continued working with Bonjisi’s brothers, Tafunga and Lovemore. Eventually, he chose to establish his own independent practice, selling a cow to purchase stone and begin working for himself. He has since developed his own workshop and now employs other assistants.
STYLE AND SUBJECTS:
His work is rooted in Zimbabwean sculptural traditions, often reflecting a strong connection to stone carving and personal storytelling through form. His development as an artist is closely tied to mentorship and hands on learning.
