Lovemore Bonjisi
BORN:
Ruwa, Zimbabwe, 1985
EARLY LIFE:
Lovemore Bonjisi is the youngest member of a family of stone sculptors. He was unable to attend school due to not having a birth certificate and instead entered the world of sculpture at a young age. At around 12 years old, he began assisting his older brother, Lameck Bonjisi, by sanding and polishing finished works. Through this hands-on training, he gradually developed his own sculptural skills.
LIVES:
He lives and works in Zimbabwe.
CAREER:
Bonjisi was trained by his brother, who eventually allowed him to work directly on small pieces of raw stone. By the age of 14, he was producing sculptures that attracted the attention of art dealers working with his brother. This early recognition led him to work on larger and more ambitious stone pieces. He is now considered one of Zimbabwe’s leading stone sculptors, with a strong international presence.
STYLE AND SUBJECTS:
His work is rooted in Zimbabwean stone sculpture traditions, often characterised by expressive, organic forms. His practice reflects both technical skill and a deep connection to material, developed through years of direct carving experience.
MEDIUMS USED:
Stone sculpture (primarily Zimbabwean stone).
AWARDS AND EXHIBITIONS:
Lovemore Bonjisi’s work has been exhibited in galleries around the world. His sculptures are widely collected and are held in both private and public collections internationally, reflecting his significant reputation within contemporary stone sculpture.
