Liam Hopkins
BORN:
Liam Hopkins was born in Ashton-under-Lyne, Greater Manchester, in 1985. He works from Lazerian, his multidisciplinary art and design studio housed within a former hat factory in Denton, Greater Manchester.
CAREER:
Liam grew up in a home where very little was discarded. Televisions, radios, kettles and other everyday objects were dismantled and examined, encouraging an early fascination with materials, construction and engineering. As a teenager, he restored a Lambretta scooter and later rebuilt a classic Mini, completing it by the time he passed his driving test.
He studied 3D Design at Tameside College before continuing his education at Manchester Metropolitan University’s School of Art. In 2006, he founded Lazerian as a creative studio through which he develops sculpture, public art, installations, furniture and experimental objects.
Liam’s practice combines traditional craftsmanship with digital design and advanced manufacturing. His work is driven by material experimentation, engineering, sustainability and the transformation of familiar objects into unexpected sculptural forms. Alongside his studio practice, he has contributed to design education as an associate lecturer at Manchester School of Art.

Metal, paper, cardboard, glass, ceramics, wood, plastics and reclaimed or repurposed materials.

Sculpture, public art, architectural installations, furniture, lighting, spatial design and material-led experimentation.
EXHIBITIONS:
Liam’s work has been exhibited throughout the UK and internationally, including in Milan, New York, London, Geneva and Dubai. An early breakthrough came when a table created for the Liverpool Design Show won first prize for furniture design. This led to commissions and collaborations with organisations including Liberty, Heal’s and Habitat.
Since then, Liam has created ambitious sculptures and installations for galleries, public spaces, cultural organisations and international brands. His work ranges from intricately constructed paper objects to large-scale permanent public artworks, united by a distinctive approach to structure, storytelling and materials.
