Joanna Mallin-Davies
BORN:
Joanna Mallin-Davies was born in 1965 in Rhondda Valleys, South Wales.
EDUCATION:
Mallin-Davies graduated in ceramic art from the college of Art in Cardiff in 1989.
CAREER:
Mallin-Davies has lived and worked in many places in the world, including Asia. Most recently, she lived and worked for some years on the edge of a fjord in North Denmark, before moving to Firenze, where she currently lives. Her work is touched by the influences of all these diverse cultures.
MATERIALS:
Initially educated is in ceramics, she developed her work into bronze and was apprenticed with a bronze caster and subsequently worked in a fine art foundry for several years.
STYLE & SUBJECTS:
Her first love is Terracotta, female nudes and bronze horses.
Although at its source Joanna`s work is fundamentally classical, it carries the influence of ancient Chinese and Japanese art, Hindu, Buddhist, and Taoist symbolism and philosophies, from her having lived in Asia for some years.
EXHIBITIONS:
Her work is exhibited all around the world and can be found in both private and public collections and museums.
Exhibitions include Jonathan Poole Gallery, Compton Cassey, from 1989; The First Move, WAC, 1990; The Mandarin Oriental Fine Arts, Hong Kong, 1994; Andres Contemporary Arts, Singapore, and The Raw Gallery, New York, both from 1997; Lamont Gallery, from 1998; Open Eye Gallery, Edinburgh International Festival Exhibition, 1999; and Vertigo Gallery 2001.
She had a solo exhibition at Morso Folkebilbilotek Kunst Galeri, Denmark, 2001.
Commissions include Traces of Past Sculpture Trail, Frostrup, Denmark, and a life-size bronze, Warrior 1, Brockhall Village Estate, Lancashire, both 2000; life-size sculpture, Broomhill Art Hotel & Sculpture Garden, Barnstaple, and life-size sculpture Acrobat 1, Hojriis Slot og Gods, Morso, Denmark, both 2001; and life-size sculptures Horseman 1 and 2, Hojriis Slot og Gods, both 2002.
