Jim Poolman
BORN:
Born in the United Kingdom, raised around Windsor.
EARLY LIFE:
A farmer’s son, Jim Poolman left school at 15 to begin an apprenticeship at a Ford tractor dealership. He later worked in a factory developing 4WD tractors. He earned an NDagri E diploma from the West of Scotland Agricultural College and spent a year traveling and working across North America, including the USA, Mexico, Belize, Guatemala, Canada, and Alaska through a student exchange program.
LIVES:
He is based in Eversley, Hampshire, United Kingdom.
CAREER:
After returning to the UK (including travel aboard the RMS Queen Elizabeth 2), Poolman worked with a Chrysler dealership and later with the Dutch vehicle manufacturer DAF. Recognizing an opportunity, he founded Orlando Engineering in Eversley as a service centre. His engineering ventures also included manufacturing aeroplane hangars and developing an off road vehicle known as “The Ant.”
Alongside his engineering career, Poolman has spent over three decades creating steel sculptures. Drawing on connections with farriers, he sources used horseshoes to create distinctive works, including furniture pieces and imaginative sculptures such as dragons and other mythical creatures.

Recycled steel, particularly horseshoes, along with other industrial metal components.
STYLE AND SUBJECTS:
His work blends industrial craftsmanship with artistic creativity, often transforming everyday materials into decorative furnishings and sculptural forms. Common themes include animals especially horses and mythical creatures, such as his notable “horseshoe dragon.”

Poolman’s work has been produced independently and shared through commissions and private collections, reflecting a unique crossover between engineering and artistic design.
