Alan Foxley
BORN:
1933
LIVES:
Essex
EDUCATION & CAREER:
Alan trained at Bath Academy of Art Corsham. He taught Art in schools from 1957-74.
He then became a Lecturer in Ceramics Saffron Walden College of Education until it closed 1977. From then on he became a self-employed potter and since 1998 has concentrated on individual sculptural work.
MEDIUMS USED IN WORK:
Alan works in a variety of ways with various types of clay but is currently coiling, slabbing and pinching unique, sculptural pieces using Crank clay. These are reduction fired to 1280 C followed by polishing with abrasives. Pieces are often reworked with oxides, slips and porcelain and dry or semi-matt glazes then re-fired to get the desired effect.
SUBJECTS OF WORK:
Alan studies both natural and man-made forms, looking at beetles, Egyptian amulets, armour, boats, stones and the human form. He uses texture to depict the effects of the elements and time and to give his work a ageless feel to encourage viewers to touch it.
