Ewit Nyanhongo
BORN:
Ewit Nyanhongo was born in 1970.
EARLY LIFE:
Ewit was born into a renowned family of Zimbabwean stone sculptors. He is the son of Claudius Nyanhongo, one of the pioneers of the Shona sculpture movement. Growing up in this artistic environment, Ewit was surrounded by stone carving from an early age and began learning the craft as a child.
LIVES:
He is based between Zimbabwe and Europe, and has spent significant periods working and exhibiting internationally, particularly in Germany.
CAREER:
Ewit developed his sculptural practice through both family mentorship and formal exposure to the Shona carving tradition. He became a full time sculptor in the late 1980s, building a reputation for his expressive and symbolic stone works. Over time, he has exhibited widely across Europe, the United States, and Africa, contributing to the global recognition of Zimbabwean sculpture.
MATERIALS:
Ewit primarily works in hard stone, including serpentine, springstone, and opal stone. He carves directly into the material, allowing the natural qualities of the stone, such as colour and texture, to influence the final form.
STYLE AND SUBJECTS:
His work blends traditional Shona themes with contemporary expression. Ewit often explores spiritual, familial, and emotional subjects, including motherhood, human relationships, and inner reflection. His sculptures are known for their smooth, flowing forms and polished surfaces, often abstracting the human figure while maintaining a strong sense of identity and feeling.
AWARDS AND EXHIBITIONS:
Ewit has exhibited extensively in international galleries and sculpture parks, earning recognition for his role in continuing and evolving the Shona sculptural tradition. His work is held in private and public collections worldwide and is appreciated for its craftsmanship, cultural depth, and expressive power.
