Eddie Masaya
BORN:
Nyanga, Zimbabwe, 1960
EARLY LIFE:
Eddie Masaya is cousin of the first generation Zimbabwe sculptor Moses Masaya.
EDUCATION:
In 1981, after finishing his schooling, he travelled to Harare to work with Moses where he spent two years training under his wing. After moving to the rural area of Guruve he further refined his skills working with another famed Zimbabwean artist, Brighton Sango.
MATERIALS:
Stone. He rarely applies wax to his pieces, preferring natural stone surfaces and colours.
STYLE & SUBJECTS:
His subject matter ranges broadly from deeply personal to more cultural themes. His works are known for their rough textures and ghostly appearance. Deeply fascinated by the natural qualities of stone, he is often guided by structural textures, flaws and resistance within each piece to inspire his art. He says, “It’s like the stone commands you, and you then just follow it’s formation and bring out the piece as is desired”.
AWARDS & EXHIBITIONS:
His work is exhibited world wide.
Eddie Masaya sculptures are available from the sculpture park.
