Dick Budden

BORN:
Dick Budden was born in Jersey in 1940.

EARLY LIFE:
While freelancing at the BBC as a prop maker, Dick learned to create almost anything from expanded polystyrene. During quieter periods, he carved his own wood sculptures, developing the technical skills and creative confidence that would shape his later work.

EDUCATION:
He attended Kings School followed by Bournemouth College of Arts, where he received formal training in art and sculpture.

CAREER:
Dick Budden has worked closely with the renowned sculptor Kenneth Armitage, assisting in enlarging three of Armitage’s final public works. His career combines technical expertise with practical experience gained through both studio practice and collaborative projects.

MATERIALS:
He works with polystyrene, plaster, and wood, some of which are later cast in bronze, allowing him to explore both form and permanence in his sculptures.

STYLE AND SUBJECTS:
Dick’s work reflects a combination of technical experimentation and expressive sculptural form, often translating small-scale models into larger, enduring works.
