Clare Tupman
BORN:
Clare Tupman is a British sculptor.
EARLY LIFE:
From early on, Clare demonstrated a passion for creating large scale works, particularly inspired by animals and the human form. Her interest in combining structure with expressive detail has guided her exploration of different sculptural techniques throughout her career.
LIVES:
She lives and works from her home studio in Somerset, England, and is a mother of four.
EDUCATION:
Clare studied at the Ruskin School of Art in Oxford, where she developed her technical skills and artistic vision.
CAREER:
Clare began her career casting sculptures in bronze but found the material limiting for the scale she wanted to achieve. She transitioned to welding, developing a distinctive style of building sculptures from steel frameworks and layering small stainless steel pieces to form lifelike muscle and movement. Her monumental works have been commissioned for public spaces, including a Dolphin Fountain for Somerset County Council, currently installed in Yeovil, Somerset.
MATERIALS:
Clare works primarily in steel and stainless steel, using welding to construct large, durable sculptures suitable for outdoor display.
STYLE AND SUBJECTS:
Her work focuses on large scale animal and figurative sculptures. By layering cut pieces of steel over frameworks, she creates a sense of anatomy, movement, and vitality, giving her figures an expressive, almost lifelike quality.
AWARDS AND EXHIBITIONS:
Clare’s work has been commissioned for public art installations and is widely recognised for its scale, craftsmanship, and distinctive welded style, establishing her as a prominent figure in contemporary British sculpture.
