Charles Kowo

BORN:
Charles Kowo was born in 1980 in Mutoko, a mountainous region in north eastern Zimbabwe known for its rich deposits of purple lepidolite and serpentine stone, often called leopard rock.

EARLY LIFE:
Charles experienced a challenging childhood. After his father passed away in 1992, his mother moved with her eight children to Guruve in northern Zimbabwe. This area is well known for its geology and strong community of stone sculptors. It was here that Charles was first exposed to sculpture and began developing an interest in the art form.

EDUCATION:
His training was informal and hands on. Charles was mentored by Obert Marime, an established sculptor known for abstract work. From 2002 to 2005, Charles worked as his assistant, learning essential carving techniques and developing his artistic skills.

CAREER:
In 2005, encouraged by his mentor, Charles began creating his own sculptures while continuing to work alongside Obert Marime until 2012. He then moved to Harare, where increased exposure to buyers and visitors helped him establish himself professionally. The proximity to local serpentine mines also provided affordable and accessible materials, supporting his growth as an independent artist.

MATERIALS:
Charles primarily works with locally sourced stone, particularly serpentine and other Zimbabwean materials known for their quality and variety.

STYLE AND SUBJECTS:
His work is influenced by both traditional Zimbabwean sculpture and abstract forms. He often explores expressive shapes and forms inspired by his surroundings and experiences.

AWARDS AND EXHIBITIONS:
Charles has become an established sculptor, with his work gaining recognition among collectors and within Zimbabwe’s vibrant sculpting community.
