Brian Alabaster

BORN:
Brian Alabaster was born in 1956.

EARLY LIFE:
Alabaster developed a strong appreciation for art and the natural world from an early age. His later work reflects a deep connection to both the countryside and the human form, suggesting these influences were present throughout his upbringing.

CAREER:
Based in Suffolk, Brian Alabaster is recognised as one of Britain’s leading figurative sculptors and is a member of the Royal British Society of Sculptors (MRBS). His work is primarily cast in bronze and includes portraiture, especially of children, as well as studies of natural forms and objects.

All of his sculptures are modelled from life, giving them a strong sense of realism and character. His early work often featured his own children, and these pieces remain some of his most popular. His sculptures can be found in both private and public collections.

MATERIALS:
Alabaster works mainly in clay for the initial modelling process. He then uses the traditional lost-wax casting technique to produce limited edition bronze sculptures. He personally undertakes every stage of production, from initial clay maquettes to the final casting in molten metal. Some works also incorporate running water to enhance movement and vitality.

STYLE AND SUBJECTS:
His work focuses on the human form, particularly children in natural, relaxed poses. Inspired by the countryside, fossils, rock formations, and classical ceramics, his sculptures capture moments of life, movement, and play.

AWARDS AND EXHIBITIONS:
His work is widely collected and exhibited, contributing to his reputation as a leading contemporary British figurative sculptor.
