Black Forest
BORN:
The Huggler name originates from a family of Swiss woodcarvers. The tradition is linked to Johann Huggler’s father, who lived from 1806 to 1846 in Switzerland.
EARLY LIFE:
The Huggler family came from the town of Brienz, which has long been a centre for woodcarving. Growing up in this environment, family members were surrounded by skilled artisans and developed carving techniques from an early age as part of a strong local tradition.
EDUCATION:
The carving skills were passed down through generations rather than through formal education. Knowledge of carving was taught within the family and local workshops, following traditional Swiss craft methods.
CAREER:
The Huggler name became well known as both a family and a company associated with high quality wood carvings from Brienz. Their work contributed to the reputation of Swiss woodcarving, particularly during the 19th century when tourism increased demand for decorative carvings.
MATERIALS:
Their carvings are typically made from wood such as walnut and linden (limewood), both of which are suitable for detailed hand carving. These materials are commonly used in both Swiss and Black Forest wood carving traditions.
STYLE AND SUBJECTS:
Huggler carvings, like many from the Black Forest tradition, often feature animals, especially bears. These bears are commonly shown playing instruments, climbing trees, or in humorous, lifelike poses. The carvings can also include functional items such as furniture. Many pieces are not signed, which is typical of traditional workshop production.
AWARDS AND EXHIBITIONS:
While specific awards are not widely recorded, Huggler carvings have become highly collectible and are recognised internationally as part of the heritage of Swiss and Black Forest woodcarving.kh
