Ben Barrell

BORN:

1971, United Kingdom

EARLY LIFE:

Raised on a farm in North Cornwall, Barrell developed an early fascination with shape and form, attending a Saturday art club where he experimented with plaster and concrete casting. His surroundings, coastal landscapes, farming life, and the sea, deeply influenced his creative vision. Experiences of sailing and surfing, along with observing the movement of waves and boats, continue to inform the flowing forms in his work.

EDUCATION:

Studied at the University of the West of England (1992–1995).

CAREER:

Barrell has established a sculptural practice centred on outdoor and functional artworks, creating pieces that merge artistic expression with usability. His work is exhibited across galleries and outdoor venues in the UK.

MATERIALS:

Works primarily in bronze and recycled Cornish granite, combining durability with natural texture and environmental sensitivity.

STYLE AND SUBJECTS:

Inspired by the dynamic forces of nature, particularly the sea and coastal landscape, his work is characterised by flowing, organic forms. He often creates interactive sculpture, including functional pieces such as benches, that reflect movement, balance, and the rhythm of the natural world.

AWARDS AND EXHIBITIONS:

Exhibited at venues including Marshall Murray (Kent), Moncrieff-Bray Gallery (West Sussex), Yew Tree Gallery (Cornwall), and the Barn Galleries (Henley-on-Thames), showcasing works such as the Crescent Bench and Pebble Seat. His sculptures are recognised for their integration of form, function, and landscape.
