Armando Varela

BORN:

1933, Lima, Peru

EARLY LIFE:

Grew up in Lima, where he developed an early interest in sculpture and the visual arts, later pursuing formal training to refine his skills.

EDUCATION:

Studied sculpture for eight years at the Escuela Nacional de Bellas Artes (ENBA), graduating with the Gold Medal, the school’s highest honour. Awarded a French Government Scholarship, he studied for one year at L’Ecole des Beaux Arts in 1963. Later attended St Martin’s School of Art (1972–1973) and served on staff in the Sculpture department from 1979 to 1998.

CAREER:

Taught sculpture at the National University of Engineering in Peru (1964–1965) and has since lived and worked in London, producing professional sculptural work and mentoring future artists.

MATERIALS:

Works primarily in bronze and other metals, creating durable and expressive sculptures.

STYLE AND SUBJECTS:

Focuses on three-dimensional, figurative, and abstract forms, combining classical technique with modern expression.

AWARDS AND EXHIBITIONS:

Recognised for technical skill and artistic merit, his work has been exhibited internationally and continues to be influential in both teaching and professional sculpture practice.
