Andaminyo Chihota

BORN:
Andamiyo Chihota was born in 1976 in Chitungwiza, Zimbabwe.

LIVES:
Although he is still a member of the Tengenenge Art Community, Chihota relocated to Harare to increase exposure of his work.

EARLY LIFE:
He first began carving at age 13 in Guruve, a rural region with a rich stone-sculpting tradition.

CAREER:
Chihota has travelled to several countries to participate in group exhibitions and give sculpting workshops. He always seeks to achieve balance in his work and places great importance on details in the finish. The majority of his sculptures feature delicately decorated eyes, which are deeply expressive.

MEDIUMS USED IN WORK:
He selects his stones carefully and favours an exceptionally beautiful fruit serpentine from a specific mine near Guruve.

SUBJECTS OF WORK:
Chihota finds inspiration from various sources and is known for his sculptures of birds, animals, and the Shona people.

EXHIBITIONS:
Chihota’s sculptures have been exhibited in several major group shows of Shona sculptures, including the Museum of Fine Arts in San Diego, California. They have been sold to collectors in Holland, Germany, Belgium, the UK, the USA, and Canada.
