EARLY LIFE:
Alfred Mutuke discovered his passion for sculpting at a young age, beginning by carving wooden cooking tools. After completing his education at Matizha Primary School and Chikwerengwe Secondary School, he moved to Harare in 2001 to pursue sculpture professionally.

In Harare, Alfred met the artist L. Gonde, who became his mentor and introduced him to stone sculpture, teaching him essential techniques including stone washing and finishing. By the end of 2002, inspired and guided by Gonde, Alfred began creating his own sculptures, and in 2004 he became an established independent artist.

CAREER:
Alfred Mutuke has built an international reputation as a Zimbabwean stone sculptor, creating works that are collected and exhibited worldwide. He is a member of the Chitungwiza Arts Centre, contributing to Zimbabwe’s renowned sculptural tradition.

MEDIUMS USED IN WORK:
Working predominantly in hard stone, Alfred uses materials including Springstone and fruit stone, carefully shaping and polishing each piece to enhance the natural qualities of the stone.

SUBJECTS OF WORK:
His sculptures often explore human emotion, spirituality, family relationships and the connection between people and nature, expressed through flowing organic forms.

EXHIBITIONS:
His work has been exhibited internationally, with sculptures collected and sold in countries including the USA, Canada and the UK, alongside exhibitions celebrating contemporary Zimbabwean sculpture.
