EARLY LIFE:

Alfred Mutuke was quite young when he discovered he had a passion for sculpting.  He started by carving wooden cooking tools. Alfred moved to Harare in 2001 to pursue his passion, once he had completed his education at Matizha Primary School and secondary studies at Chikwerengwe Secondary School,

It was in Harare, he met an artist called L. Gonde, who became his mentor and taught him all he knew in stone sculpture, teaching him essential skills such as washing and finishing stones. By the end of 2002, with Gonde’s guidance and inspiration, Alfred began creating his own sculptures. In 2004, he became an acknowledged independent artist in his own right.

Alfred works mainly with hard stones, including Springstone and fruit stone, His sculptures are admired and exhibited worldwide, with pieces being sold in countries such as the USA, Canada, and the UK. Alfred is a member of the Chitungwiza Arts Centre, contributing to Zimbabwe’s vibrant sculptural tradition.
