A. Chitiyo

Ishmael Chitiyo (A. Chitiyo)

Born:
Ishmael Chitiyo was born in 1982 in Zimbabwe.

Early Life:
Orphaned at a young age, Ishmael Chitiyo faced significant challenges early in life. However, his artistic journey began when he was taught to carve by his brother, Solomon Chitiyo, who was also a sculptor. This early exposure to stone carving would shape Ishmael’s future as an artist. Later, he was further influenced by the work of the renowned first-generation Shona sculptor, Sylvester Mubayi, which expanded his understanding of Shona sculpture.

Career:
Chitiyo is a renowned sculptor based at the Chitungwiza Arts Centre in Zimbabwe, where he has developed a strong reputation for creating intricate, spiritually resonant sculptures. His work has gained recognition both locally and internationally, with his art being featured in prominent African art galleries like Guruve, ArtsofAfrica, and The Sculpture Park. In 2008, Chitiyo was named a finalist in the 3D Visual Arts category at the Zimbabwe National Arts Merit Awards (NAMA). He has also received a Certificate of Excellence from the Kristin Diehl Sculpture Park for his artistic achievements.

Materials:
He is primarily known for working with springstone and white opal. His materials allow him to bring out both rough and polished textures in his pieces, contributing to the spiritual and fluid nature of his work.

Style and Subject:
Chitiyo’s style is fluid, elegant, and polished, often combining rough and smooth textures to create depth and contrast. His subjects focus on themes of family, unity, and spirituality. His pieces include abstract and organic forms, and his sculptural themes often explore personal and emotional connections, such as in works like “Sunflower” and “Waiting for my Lover.” His figurative pieces, such as “Broken-hearted” and various abstract bird sculptures, reflect his exploration of human emotion and the interconnectedness of life.

Awards and Exhibitions:

Zimbabwe National Arts Merit Awards (NAMA), 2008: Finalist in the 3D Visual Arts category.

Certificate of Excellence: Awarded by the Kristin Diehl Sculpture Park.

His works are regularly exhibited at major African art galleries, including Guruve, ArtsofAfrica, and The Sculpture Park.
