The Sculpture Park was honoured this summer to be invited to install Wilfred Pritchard’s Skeletons at Glastonbury 2023.
Three favourite skull-ptures from the Wilfred Pritchard Skeleton collection adorned the Theatre and Circus fields for this iconic event. Specifically, works were chosen to harmonize with the artistic entertainment theme of the location. The fields of wonder featured circus, theatre and dance acts. Simultaneously, performances contained comedy, music and the spoken word. Acts ran from mid-morning until late late-night during the June weekend.
Who is Wilfred Pritchard?
Wilfred Pritchard is a sculptor that has a very eclectic approach to artwork. Consequently, his work looks at the witty, macabre and the controversial. Sculptures often feature skeletons in bizarre, humorous and iconic situations. Antique objects are a key feature to most pieces.
What were the Skeletons at Glastonbury called?
‘Acrobats’ depicts a trio of bony-bodies forming a human triangle. This joyous work enjoyed panoramic views from the backdrop of the performing arts stage.
‘Backflip’ was positioned outside the circus tent. Crows were wowed with his static somersault.
Finally, the pièce de résistance lay with ‘Brassed Away’. This musical skeleton had the privilege of blowing his own trumpet (or is it a trum-bone? Actually it is a Sousaphone!) behind The Body Coach himself. Joe Wicks was executing the first ever Glastonbury HiiT workout during the morning excitement.
All three sculptures had a wonderful adventure throughout their 7 day holiday in Worthy Farm, Pilton, Somerset. They soon became known as ‘The Skeletons of Glastonbury’.
Installing sculpture at Glastonbury
Over 210,000 people attended the festival including 3,000 performing artists. While The Sculpture Park sent just 1 member of our installation team; Oscar. He was ably assisted by the Theatre and Circus crew, so our precious sculptures were safely and carefully installed. We would like to thank the festival for welcoming Wilfred Pritchard’s skeletons with open arms. The Sculpture Park look forwarded to working again with this formidable event.
Where did the Skeletons of Glastonbury come from?
Wilfred Pritchard displays his skeleton sculpture collection at The Sculpture Park in Churt, near Farnham, Surrey. This all-year-round outdoor sculpture exhibition is open to the public to view and purchase every day of the year. For visitors wanting to enjoy a cultural walk, The Sculpture Park offers a two-mile undulating trail through arboretum and water gardens.
