‘Icarus I’ by Nicola Godden: From The Sculpture Park to a New Home

We recently completed the sale, delivery and installation of ‘Icarus I’ by Nicola Godden – a monumental, life-sized sculpture inspired by one of Greek mythology’s most enduring stories.

Our customer first discovered Icarus I while visiting The Sculpture Park, where she saw the sculpture on display and fell in love with it.

The piece exhibited at the park was cast in bronze resin, but our customer wanted the sculpture in traditional bronze. So, rather than simply selling the work on display, The Sculpture Park worked directly with artist Nicola Godden to make this possible.

Nicola organised and personally oversaw the casting of a brand-new bronze Icarus I, created especially for our customer as part of the sculpture’s limited edition of just six. The work was expertly cast by Sculpture Castings before being delivered and installed in its new home by The Sculpture Park.

The Story Behind ‘Icarus I’

A monumental sculpture of the life-sized boy Icarus, son of Daedalus, Icarus I captures the young figure at the moment he is about to leap into the sky in pursuit of freedom.

The sculpture is filled with a wonderful sense of anticipation, possibility and youthful fearlessness.

As Nicola Godden explains:

“I had been fascinated by the Icarus myth for a long time and found him an inspiring figure of daring, youthful courage and optimism.”

The sculpture was originally commissioned for the London Olympics in 2012, giving the work an especially fitting connection with ideas of ambition, courage and human endeavour.

Commissioning ‘Icarus I’ in Bronze

For collectors interested in owning Icarus I in bronze, new casts can be commissioned subject to availability within the limited edition.

As each bronze is individually cast and finished, the lead time is approximately 12–16 weeks.

The Sculpture Park works closely with artists and foundries to help collectors acquire exceptional sculpture, including works that may need to be specially cast or commissioned. In this case, we were able to take our customer’s discovery of a bronze-resin sculpture at the park and turn it into the acquisition of a newly cast bronze from the artist’s limited edition.
