Polish Pieta by Sean Crampton, Bronze, Signed, From Edition of 6. 27cm high by 30cm wide by 10cm deep, Abstract sculpture

Polish Pieta is a powerful artistic representation of the broken body of Poland. Created in support of the Solidarność (Solidarity) movement and as a poignant reflection on Poland’s betrayal during World War II and the intervening years of occupation. The sculpture depicts the body of Poland cradled by the Pieta. The rock beneath symbolising both strength and hope, echoing the biblical phrase, “You are Peter, and on this rock I will build my Church.” It embodies the resilience of the Polish people and the hope that the Solidarity movement would bring eventual emancipation.

Solidarity in Poland was a non-violent social movement and the first independent trade union in the Soviet bloc. Founded in 1980 by Lech Wałęsa at the Gdańsk Shipyards. It united millions of workers to challenge communist rule. Ultimately leading to free elections in 1989 and contributing significantly to the collapse of communism in Eastern Europe. The movement demanded workers’ rights, economic reform, and national autonomy, demonstrating the power of collective, peaceful action.

The sculpture also references historical works such as Rendezvous (Low, 1939). A piece which depicts Soviet dictator Joseph Stalin and Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler shaking hands over a prostrate body labeled “Poland”. Symbolising the cynical collusion of totalitarian regimes and the erasure of Polish independence at the start of World War II.

This piece is more than a historical reflection; it is a tribute to courage, resilience, and the unbreakable spirit of a nation. Every element, from the cradling figure to the solid rock beneath, invites viewers to reflect on the trials endured by Poland and the eventual triumph of hope and solidarity.

Polish Pieta is a striking work of art that combines historical memory, political commentary, and profound emotional resonance. It is ideal for collectors, galleries, and institutions seeking a sculpture that conveys both aesthetic beauty and a compelling story of resilience, courage, and hope. Owning this piece is not only an investment in art but also a celebration of human strength and the enduring power of collective resolve.
