Soulmates for Life by McDonald Kufa, Serpentine stone, Unique, 55cm high, 40cm wide, 16cm deep
Soulmates for Life by McDonald Kufa is an expressive Shona Serpentine stone sculpture that explores companionship, unity and enduring connection through an elegant abstract form. Measuring 55 cm high, 40 cm wide and 16 cm deep, this unique sculpture transforms solid stone into a flowing composition of twisting strands that appear to move together as one.
The sculpture rises from a strong, solid base before separating into individual elongated forms. From here, the strands curve upwards, twisting around one another as they travel through the composition. At a few points, they reconnect and overlap, creating a continuous visual relationship between the separate elements. Consequently, the structure reflects the idea of two lives following individual paths while remaining closely connected.
Moreover, the sweeping curves create a series of open spaces between the solid sections of stone. These areas of negative space allow light to pass through the sculpture, adding depth and emphasising the rhythm of each twist and turn. As a result, Soulmates for Life reveals subtle changes in shape and balance when viewed from different angles.
The natural qualities of Serpentine stone further complement the sculpture’s organic character. Its solidity contrasts beautifully with the apparent flexibility of the strands, while the narrow 16 cm depth gives the work a defined silhouette and emphasises its interwoven design. Meanwhile, the connected forms reinforce the themes of partnership and togetherness suggested by the title.
Ultimately, Soulmates for Life presents a graceful interpretation of lasting companionship through abstract form. As a unique McDonald Kufa sculpture, it combines contemporary expression with the distinctive craftsmanship of Zimbabwean Shona stone carving, making it a refined addition to a modern interior, gallery or collection of contemporary African sculpture.
