Modern
Modern sculpture is a style of art that emerged in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and is characterized by a number of features, including:
-
Break from tradition: Modern sculpture broke away from traditional techniques and subjects, using new materials and forms to convey innovative ideas.
-
Abstraction: Sculptures often tend towards abstraction, with distorted and fragmented forms.
-
New materials: Sculptors experimented with new materials like metal, glass, and plastic, instead of the more traditional stone and bronze.
-
Emphasis on design: Sculptures often emphasize design, form, and volume.
-
Movement: Sculptures often suggest movement.
-
Site-specific art: Modern sculptures are often created outdoors and are sometimes site-specific, meaning they are intentionally created for a specific place.
-
Public art: The public’s reaction to sculpture in public spaces is a modern concept, as new parks and urban spaces were being developed in the 19th and 20th centuries.
-
Influenced by other cultures: Influenced by new sources of inspiration, including cultures outside of the European tradition.
Some pioneers of modern sculpture include Auguste Rodin, Constantin Brâncuși, and Henry Moore

Dancing Stone III by Lilly Henry, Bronze Resin.
These substantial monumental pieces are stunning when displayed either by themselves, or as a trio. Each one carries the suggestion of form and movement under it’s surface, with curves and shapes giving a different impression from each angle.
“Twenty years ago whilst on holiday in Cypress , I was beach combing near Aphrodite’s Rock, when I came by these 3 small flints no bigger than 6′ each high. I was mesmerized by their captured movement of Dance, like they had been three beings that had been turned to stone, but continue to perfuse a sense of dance! Had they upset the legendary Aphrodite the goddess of love, who knows! The opportunity came to turn these little magical stones into large form sculptures and give them the presence that they deserve! Aphrodite’s Dancing Stones.”
