Modern

Modern sculpture is a style of art that emerged in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and is characterized by a number of features, including:

  • Break from tradition: Modern sculpture broke away from traditional techniques and subjects, using new materials and forms to convey innovative ideas. 
  • Abstraction: Sculptures often tend towards abstraction, with distorted and fragmented forms. 
  • New materials: Sculptors experimented with new materials like metal, glass, and plastic, instead of the more traditional stone and bronze. 
  • Emphasis on design: Sculptures often emphasize design, form, and volume. 
  • Movement: Sculptures often suggest movement. 
  • Site-specific art: Modern sculptures are often created outdoors and are sometimes site-specific, meaning they are intentionally created for a specific place. 
  • Public art: The public’s reaction to sculpture in public spaces is a modern concept, as new parks and urban spaces were being developed in the 19th and 20th centuries. 
  • Influenced by other cultures: Influenced by new sources of inspiration, including cultures outside of the European tradition. 

Some pioneers of modern sculpture include Auguste Rodin, Constantin Brâncuși, and Henry Moore
